Sales were falling. The reviews told another story.

How a marketplace conversation became an online store of their own project. An anonymous home and decor collaboration.

The client wanted to continue on the marketplace. Sales there were falling, and the business relied increasingly on the platform. We started by reading the reviews. People were describing products they sought out and appreciated.

A declining channel does not explain the whole product.

That signal prompted a conversation about another direction. We saw products valued by buyers and a business increasingly dependent on where it sold them. We did not automatically treat declining platform sales as a verdict on the products themselves.

Reviews are not a sales forecast. They do not tell you what a new customer will cost on an owned website. They can, however, reveal what people seek, value and deserve further investigation before a business abandons a direction or continues through inertia.

We proposed a channel the business could build.

The conversation moved towards an online store of their own. We built the website and began paid advertising on Meta, Google and TikTok. The collaboration ran approximately from November 2025 to February 2026.

That is the contribution documented here: the observation in reviews, the change in direction, store development and advertising across three platforms. We no longer have access to those accounts, so we do not publish performance figures we cannot currently verify.

An online store of their own does not come with demand included.

This is the part we should not skip. A business opening a store has to build its route to buyers. It needs to explain products, support the offer and fulfil orders. The website provides a place to do that; it does not guarantee people will come.

In this collaboration, the store and advertising belonged to the same decision. We did not recommend building without also discussing how to reach interested people. Another business may need a different sequence or approach because its resources are different.

Closing the marketplace would not be my starting point.

For a business in a similar position, I would first list what the platform provides: access to buyers, trust, search and sometimes logistics. An independent store has to build or pay for those things. A marketplace fee that disappears does not become profit in full.

Then consider what you can control more directly: the offer, store experience, measurement and relationship with people who choose to stay in touch. That is the value of an owned channel. Some businesses will benefit from keeping both channels with different roles.

Before investing in an entire catalogue, choose a category you understand well. Check the offer, stock, costs and how you will reach potential buyers. Follow orders through delivery and returns. A focused test can answer the question faster than a major rebuild started before you know what you need to learn.

What reviews tell you beyond the stars.

Look for the reason for purchase, the situation in which the product was used and the surprises afterwards. A customer mentioning that it fits a small space offers different information from someone simply calling it good. The first observation can inform photography, descriptions and audience selection. The second shows satisfaction but tells you less about the reason.

Read what went wrong as well. Praise for the product combined with complaints about packaging calls for a different response from confusion about assembly. Separate the product, retailer and platform. An independent store cannot fix a manufacturing problem simply by changing the channel.

Do not automatically move reviews between platforms. Use the observations to understand buyers, and check rights and context before publishing a testimonial. You can improve the page without borrowing someone’s identity or words.

What to examine in your own business.

Read reviews and messages for patterns. What, specifically, did people appreciate? What problem did the product solve? What caused hesitation? Preserve the meaning and check whether an observation appears often enough to pursue. One sentence is not a verdict on the entire market.

Then put the observations beside the channel’s reality: sales, costs, dependencies and your capacity to build something else. The question is not whether a marketplace is inherently good or bad. It is what role each channel should play in your business.

For us, this story matters because the decision started with people who had already bought. Before writing a new ad, we listened to what they had to say. Sometimes that is where you see what the business has not yet allowed itself to build.
